Does anyone have any advice for creating custom decals?

Mainly regarding the device to print with and where to get the material to print on.

As a cheap alternative, people print what they want on a color printer and then use clear packing tape to tape it on.

Hmm... that got me thinking... wouldn't I be able to run clear vinyl sticker sheets through a color laser printer (assuming I can find blank clear vinyl sticker sheets)?

Perhaps some alternative material that can run through a laser printer. If so that would be convenient.

Toner would be much better than ink when it comes to resisting water anyway.

You can buy decal paper from most Office Depot and Office Maxx. Most do not stock it but can order it. I have other sources as well to buy it from. I will look for them tonight and post links to them. They are somewhere in my favorites.
I made the decals on these two cars using the decal paper from Office Depot. The paper is white unfortunately, but a regular ink jet printer will print on it. If you plan your decals and cut them out accordingly it can work out very well. They make a ink sealer for printing on this paper that makes it resistant to water as well. Before you start thinking this is regular paper with an adhesive on the back it is not. This is more like a vinyl with a coating on it. It is even available in matt and gloss finishes.

I just need it for making Wyoming license plates but I have found that printing on my computer and sealing them with flat laquer works for awhile but as soon as it gets wet they curl up :)

thanks to all for this, i have been trying to work this out too. hobbyclown usa sells a product that has a nice finish, but is not waterproof, and not cheap either, so i was reluctant to purchase it . this looks like the way to go.

@ligourboxracing: Wow... Those are sweet. Especially the Beavercreek one. Me being from Dayton I know all about Beavercreek. (At least the girls that went to school there.) Nice work with the decals, I always wanted to do some crazy livery. I've got to find that paper!

Not sure if this helps, but you can print onto overhead projector sheets (depending on your printer ) then stick away. Also, you could place these on the inside of the body before you spray...never done it but seems logical. Try an offcut first. Cheers, Tony

testors makes a modelers kit available at most walmarts

Also,
Bell decal paper http://www.belldecals.com/ is better priced
They carry clear, and white waterslide decal paper for both inkjet and lazer printers

print in your printer,
let sir a few hours to ensure dry
then spray with clear spray paint (I use krylon crystal clear)
let it sit overnight

cut, dunk in water and apply
then clearcoat over to protect them

I use that method for my slotcars, and r/c's

see pic of them, created the round one after an idiot set fire to a r/c ;)
