Well, here's the story of my CR-01.
I hope can help Waterboy and all people that had the same idea!:p
Ok, this is the beginning: a standard CR-01, as you know
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4137.jpg
It's an amazing car, very funny to see and to drive, but day by day I understand that my way is SCALER way. So I tried to made my FJ40 more realistic.
I started with a simple test: lower the ride height.
Before:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4227_2.jpg
After:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4246.jpg
I got that simple...go out withe spring!
Result is very good for me: low center of gravity, less bouncing, stable on steep hills and downhills and a scale look. But I wanted more....
So I tried to adjust the wheelbase to the body fenders like this:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4648.jpg
That's ok, but ride height is again too high! Ok, go without cantilever and full drop setup, but now I had to rise the tranny....
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4766.jpg
Ok! No bad! It's time for a touch of scale:

Ok, more to come....limit of images warning

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4881.jpg
Ok, I'm satisfed now. But......but.......what about 1.9?!?!?!
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4905.jpg
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4902.jpg
GORGEUS!! But I'd to lowered more, and I can't without drag the ground with the tranny:(
Idea! I had to raise the tranny more, stratch the links (for better suspension work) and change shoks position.

Front shoks relocated:

That looks great! Nice work you have done on the chassis. I love the tiny RC car in the roof too!

That looks good. I've been considering shortening the wheelbase on my CR-01 to give it a more scale look.
Was it difficult to do? What did you do to the springs? They look compressed and shortened.

No, it's easy Tubby, you have to make new links and cut the cvd.
Like this:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4636.jpg
But as you can see in the picture, cvd now is sooooooo short and when rear suspension is fully open it can snap:eek:
That's why I made that new sideplates and skid. In this way I centered the tranny with new wheelbase and it's more accurate.
Look at the differences with the same wheelbase.
Standard sideplates and tranny position:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4635.jpg
New tranny position with handmade parts:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP5536.jpg
Concerning springs....you're right: they're cutted and compressed with the dampers in full droop setup.
In the detail, I used soft spring in the rear (no cutted, soft rate give a lot of SAG) and medium in the front (and cutted too).
Droop setup is made with some others small springs in the dampers:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4641.jpg
In this way, shoks are constricted to stay in a compressed position:
http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp22/Daigoro74/IMGP4642.jpg
Of course all that is made without the standard canty system:)

hmmm very inspiring, very nice fj ,i have been considering a similar conversion with my unimog as the wheelbase to body is way off and it bugs me no end.
congrats on perfectly executed conversion.
