Finally wore through all my stock driveshafts and spares, plus an extra given to me by a friend. It took about a year and half!
Got me some of these
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e126/CoolJetta3/CR-01%20Landcruiser/DSC_5071.jpg
They move nicely. Now that they are on I can see how much better they spin. The plastic ones had to self clearance near the joints and always had a slightly notchy spin

Every time I've twisted one it was during a scale comp where I couldn't touch the truck if it was in a tough spot. Not really sure how the last one bent to a 45 degree angle like that. Must have been from the monster torque of the CR-Tuned motor :D
They did last pretty long though considering I use the truck like crazy

LOL! Wyoming did that in a scale comp... :p

wow - they look like pretzels!
They are a bit soft from the factory, I wonder if they are designed specifially as the "give point" af the drivetrain (since there are 2 sets included) The tranny and axles are super strong, doubt that Tamiya overlooked the driveshafts, I'd wager they were designed that way.

Well if I had to choose a single point of failure, that would be it. Easiest/cheapest to replace!
Plenty of my vehicles have the axial plastic drives shafts installed. Especially after the metal drive shaft wears out like on the XC. Cheap and easy! Adds that all important single point of failure too.

It looks like the drive-shaft may have bound up from being out of phase. Too much pinion angle perhaps... ;)

The first test of the steel driveshafts, nice rocky beach, scale size rock! First I drove it to the beach from the parking lot. About a 5 minute walk, no backed out screws or failures. Then it was on to:

I guess I can throw these in here. Not sure where else to share them. More hardcore testing at the spot where all my plastic shafts failed. Rock Island in Norwich, CT.
A few pics my friend Curt's wife took on Sunday. The Hitec 645MG servo started acting up. It clicks on full lock left turn. Getting about time to get a new servo. For now I'll dial it back so it doesn't fully turn out to the clicking gears

One more upgrade.
STRC axles and lock-outs. Nice and clean look to the rear axle now. Just wish they still had black in stock for me. And I also wish Tamiya made these as a hop-up option part just so I could keep it real.

Bad new is I recently bought two pairs of Tamiya high strength axle ends and now I have an extra pair. Good news is the inside of the axles (after removing the billion screws) was perfect, even the grease. All that hard running in every kind of surface and condition and temperature did absolutely no damage to the internals.

No breakages out on the rock yesterday
Normally this would have been a rollover with the stock springs. Short barrels keeping me planted.

I totally agree with on the "Roll Over" in that one picture i am glad to hear the barrel springs are a better hop up, do they come in different stiffness these springs and how is your torque twist now with these? awesome rig bud.
860Crawler
04-26-2010, 02:51 PM
They come with the same firm/med/soft pairs in the pack. The difference is they appear to be a little thicker gauge wire than the standard spring set. For example, the soft "red" barrel springs seem to be pretty close in firmness to the yellow standard springs.
I went with the same set up as my standard spring set up with hard "blue" up front and medium "yellow" in the back. The hard up front counteracts the weight of the battery so I don't have the raked appearance. Its not so much of an issue now that I've been using lighter LiPo packs (also helps reduce rollovers), but I'm used to the handling this way now

I've noticed some rigs don't rake and others do. Mine looked like a hot rod and I couldn't stand it, especially with the Bronco body which already seems like it has a raked appearance:D

Time to try and get stuck. 3R winch installed. I made an aluminum mount which is attached to the frame cross member and held in front by a slot in the back of the bumper.

Here's some more updates to the winch and control.

I made an aluminum bracket that mounts to the battery tray and holds a Hitec HS-55 micro servo and the winch control. The servo is now hooked to the 3rd channel of the radio. When I press the button it hits the button on the winch control.

I just read through this entire thread and all I can say is WOW!! I love the CR-01 platform and the mods you've made look very effective. I especially loved the paint on that Bronco, I've always loved Ford Broncos. After reading this I need to finish building mine, it's been sitting in a drawer now for a year and a half. I really lost interest in the hobby after my brother past away, but I'm starting to come back to the hobby. I've been slowly working on a couple trucks, but with five kids I build them real slow. However once again great looking trucks even the Pacer and the Yotas stand out with their own style.
