View Full Version : 4 X 4 Chevy Van

This build has been in the back of my mind since late last year sometime. I know, Vans aren't real good rock crawlers, but they still make 4 x 4 vans in the 1:1 world. I just saw one the other day, and it looked kinda wicked.
This will be the first time I have built the body before I have even started on a chassis with axles. I don't even have any axles "yet". TLT's of course..
The body is still pretty rough, but its a good start I think. (check out the difference between it and the a lunch box body)
My 1st mock up, a month or so ago. ( This is all of the old clod body pieces leftover from all of my other Bowtie builds)

I started last nite, had a wild hair going on.

And this is as of this afternoon.

Like, I said, its still really rough, but I have the hard part done.. It just kinda hit me last nite, after I got to looking through all the left overs from my chevy builds, how easy it would be to do a van now.
Let me know your thoughts or comments. Thanks for checking it out.

Well done Jeff! I think you know my thoughts on this one. Good to see progress on this build and some size / scale comparison to the LB. I trust you're not going to paint it A-Team colours :D

The first Chevy vans came out in 1964 and were based off the Chevrolet Corvair. That's right, the "unsafe-at-any-speed" Corvair. Of course, this produced a very weird looking van. Here is a photo of a 1966 Chevy van...
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2603/4495695559_9bce10e8eb_o.jpg
The first Chevy 4x4 van came about in 1971.
The short wheelbase vans are less common, making pictures hard to find but I did find some and a little info to go along with it. Here is a photo of a 1982 Chevy Beauville 1-ton 4X4 van. Notice how the factory windows are all above the body-line. ;)
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4496254944_b042d5c66c_o.jpg
1979-1991 Chevrolet and GMC 1-ton vans came from the factory with a GM "corporate" 14 bolt rear end and a Dana/Spicer Model 60 front axle with a passenger side differential drop, standard rotation gears, kingpin knuckles, and 35 Spline axle shafts. The "DANA 60" is easily identified by its straight axle tubes, 10 bolt asymmetrical cover, and a "60" cast in to the housing.

Here is a 1/2 ton van conversion that uses a "Dana 44" front end and leaf springs out of a Blazer.

Here is a late 80's early 90's 1-ton Chevy 4X4 van.
Factory windows....

I was gonna try and quote all of you guys, but Im lazy and its my Monday, so Im kinda "yucky" at the moment.
No "A" Team colors teebeehex. :) I thought I better put the lunchbox body in there for a size comparison. Glad you are liking it
Tinker, thanks for the link, I need all the help I can get.
Yup, a "wild hair" it was Easter :D You are the only one that said anything OSRC :) It just came to me after digging through my left over body parts, and I had to build it while I was thinking about it. (I need to finish my Jeep)
And to Skinny_TC, Thank You. I'm probably gonna to do a 2 tone unless I find a solid color I like better.
Thanks Mike, Yes I remember that "dang" song, I got so sick of it when that came out in the mid 70's, :D I was 14 or 15 and liked Black Sabbath music (still do) :)
Thanks Wyoming,, yeah, most of the Vans around here pretty bad looking.
Thank you Northwest. I haven't seen you around too much lately, are you doing OK ?
And to rcohio, Thank you, We better see a build thread on your Lunchbox
And now Arco (Jay) I knew you would find me a bunch of info on vans , I have onlry run across one of those pics you found. I love that last pic, with the mud singer looking tires
Im not sure about an interior, Im kinda burnt out on making interior's,, not sure about doors and other back windows, I will have to see how involved I want to get and what you guys can talk me into doing to this thing.
It was kinda of a building brainstorm just to get the basic body built, but I need to change the front end, its wrong but close.
(Plus I had no clue about the 1st van being based off the Corvair.. interesting)
Thanks everybody, for your input. :)

Sorry Erik, somehow I missed your comments.. I remember you and I were thinking about this back in November. Go for it, my problem at this moment, I feel brain dead. Where I work, it just drains the life force right out of you sometimes, :frusty:
Anyway, it sounds like you have a better plan then me, all I know is its gonna have solid axles on both ends. I can't decide on a tranny yet, or color, or chassis etc....

Thank you, In all my surfing to the ends of the WWW, I have yet to see a larger scale van, so I thought it would be a good challenge. And its proving to be just that, but I'm enjoying it. I really have to study the pics because there is a lot of differences between vans and trucks, I now see....

Thank you very much. My head just swelled up and can't get out of the door into the hallway. :D Anyway, I did just that, I didn't touch it for 2 days, but I finally worked on the front end last nite.
Disclaimer :: Its really rough looking, And I still have some building up to do. I've been rounding the outer edges of the grill and trying to get the hood and vents more copasetic...long long wat to go, I just wanted to show a little progress.

Hi northwest, I buy all my styrene sheets at my Local hobby Shop. They carry different thickness's and size's.
Oh yes very cool. Are you making windows on the sides? if not, i think i have an idea you may like
Thank You Andrew, thats the million dollar question I have been waiting for,
I never really liked the vans that have windows when I was a kid, I thought they were a lot neater looking with a nice mural on the side. And, as far as putting opening doors, I was against it at 1st, but I'm starting to think differently.
And, NO, if theres one thing I can't do, is paint a mural.
But I think I will need a bumper sticker that says " If this van is a Rockin (crawling) don't coma a knockin.. :D good ole play on words
ooking great Jeffro
Thank you Seth

I had a really busy weekend, now that warmer weather is here, but I did get to spend a little time on this in the early mornings and late evenings.
Made my chassis and put the TLT axles together. I reversed the shackles on the front, and just not sure about the tires, they are little. 1.55 Dirt grabbers.. I may be going to just a little larger tire. See what you guys think..
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2318/4512645057_1d157e3665_o.jpg
Also, just been kinda sanding and rounding curves a little, nothing major.

Jeff, those tires are perfect in scale terms. You could lower the body a couple of mm to help the look but I think it looks fine where it sits.
Your homebrew chassis look good, do you get much twist? I imagine you have a little more strength in it once the motor and cross members are installed.

jeffro
04-13-2010, 06:13 AM
Thanks Andrew, I came across those pics too, somewhere. I may snag a few ideas from it, but I don't think I would ever get finished. :)
The "Cooler", I'll have to think about it. The idea I have been toying with is finding someone to do a rockcrawling mural on one side, maybe something like what Joe has up above with the cacti and mountains and maybe the van and one of my otheres painted in.
And "NO" I can't even come close to painting like that..I wish.
Mike, what would I do without you, I saw all of their movies when I was stationed in "Hawaii" (you know it). Excellent pic of the grll, I'm thinking of trying to do a 70's grill, but don't hold me to it.
The more I look at those tires on there, Im kinda likeng them, but I need to try some different ones, and by the time the end rolls around, I will know better, but they really do look scale.
For right now the chassis is too far up in the body, and as it sits, yes the chassis does have a little flexability, but you are correct teebeehex, it stiffens up nicely when I get everything in place
Thank you Seth, I'm getting a huge kick out of this build, I'm getting comments from a lot of people on other forums, I seem to have hit a nerve. I just wish I knew how to type (better, faster cause right now Im a 2 finger and 1 thumb typer, )
Ok, now, check these mud thrashers out compared to the dirt grabbers, I borrowed them from ole blue, just for the time being.

If you need interior ideas.
How about a disco ball and a waterbed in back. Maybe make the bed out of one of those jelly like ice packs??? so that kinda can ooze around??
And shag carpeting :D

Thank you Northwest, those are good questions. I believe the only opening doors will be the rear doors, I've decided not to open the side doors, (unless I get another wild hair going :D And since I'm not going to do an interior, I will most likely do a tint job.

Jeff got a good look for you (driving a big truck at work has its benefits).
I saw 6 lines on the roof evenly spaced from the rain gutters. (example would be rain gutter, 10 inches, line, 10 inches, line and so on....
So if the roof is say 7 inches wide gutter to gutter if you laid a flexible measuring tape on the roof, then it would be 1 inch between each of the ribbed lines on the roof.

I agree completely, I like Vans with a little bit of flair to them. Thank you Mike.

You busted me out man, I have a few extra light units left over from some Tamiya kits, that I may try to do some lighting, since I'm not really doing an interior.
I think you guys have watched me enough to know that this will be all kinds of colors before I get it done. I did a dumb thing, I wasn't thinking, Thank goodness for Tamiya paint. (Its not good when you primer with one brand of paint, then try to shoot another brand over the top) But Tamiya primer is saving me
This is what I am up to, this sheet has 3 squares with different base colors, gold, silver and white. In natural light you can see the difference more, between gold and silver.
I want to layer the van, bottom to top, with gold on the bottom silver to define the main center of the van, with white on top, then shoot the whole thing with Flaming Orange

I take it back it looks real good! I have noticed on other builds of yours that the side mirrors look real great and scale... where do you get your side mirrors from for these chevy projects?

Thank you Kevin, if you do win and build a 1:1 van, you better show us :)

Thank you Budhatrain, now I'm the one having 2nd thoughts. Those mirrors are from the Tamiya Toyota Highlift kit. With just a little bit of work, they are almost perfect.

Thank you Moondoggie. :)

Thank you skinny
I wasn't able to do anything last night, we had a bad storm come through and take out a tree and my power, this is what I woke up to this morning

yeah I saw your thread on another forum and that you are possibly thinking another direction. I never heard of the blue making your wheelbase look off. If someone was offering to airbrush you a graphic for free- I say go for it, unless they have bad to little feedback.

Hey Mike, Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to stay with the orange, unless I get a wild hair going again. :) As for the blue and wheelbase's, its just a joke amongst us over there, kinda like bacon over there also.
The guy that is offering the mural has a lot of posts on that forum and he does have a website of his work. He's been a member of that site since 06 it looks like. I may do some digging and question asking over there.
Maybe I could get Joe to do the Tamiya Crawlers logo on the side of the van. I think a cactus or 2 would look good with some boulders and a highlift or something crawling over the rocks

Thank you,.. See, you should never leave completely, just lurk a little once in awhile. :D But, we're glad you are back.
I need to update a little progress. I'm trying to get the front windshield to fit, I finally remembered I need to put the vent windows back in, put the bowtie on the grill, and headlight lenses. I've also put some stripe's on it. There is stil a few more things I need to finish.

It still needs some touching up, I have a hard time staying steady with my hands anymore. And I tried to make an older style grill earlirer in the build, but I gave up, it looks like

Thank you Christopher, I understand, it was more of the challenge of the build then anything else.

Do you mean in scale size ?? that would be neat, that is one of my favorite years for a Ford truck.
First off, I want to say "Thank you " to everyone, for commenting or looking or lurking :D on this build. It seems to have drawn a little bit of attention here and a few other places. It was a lot of fun.
Its almost done (for now). I have a few things to do, mechanically, but the body is mostly done, maybe get the glass in for the windows, some lighting, and one of the important things, a body mount.

THANK YOU TAMIYA (yes, you too Joe, Jay, McFig) :)

On the midnight pumpkin, no I mean in body style and color... really does a black ford pickup look anything like a pumpkin?? Not really... but an orange van isn't too far off really... (going a little off topic but maybe the lunch box and pumpkin names coulda been reversed...)

Just to make you jealous.... somewhere at my parents house is an HO scale version of this van.
Its a metallic orange hot wheels van (with removable tires... lego tires fit it well actually) Hood opened though it was black plastic (same piece as interior probably)
Time to start searching e-bay to have an RC version of this van riding along in back.

@ Mike (flowmaster) I'll try an keep it shiney, or for awhile anyway.
I used to have a bunch of Hotwheels, but I left them all behind in my last divorce, I just kept the old ones from the late 60's and early 70's. I seem to remember a van. I have your address, but not your parents, darn :D
@ Joe (chaos) Thank you Joe, I'm glad you liked the build and followed along.
@ Seth (wyoming) Thank you Seth. I never owned a van myself, I don't think I ever wanted one, but I always thought they were neat. I was in my early teens in the mid 70's, so there were vans around town with some cool murals. I have never liked the vans with all of the windows either. And its funny you say you want one now because of the build, well, my problem is the same thing, only its with every build. I think that is why I got the Jeep to drive.
@ Damon (oldschool) Thanks, I wasn't sure anybody noticed it, I was going to make it bigger, but changed my mind. I know what it needs.... A Dead Head bumper sticker :common001:
