Tamiya was continuing on the three-speed tradition started in 1981 with the Hilux and they sought to improve upon the concept by adding a bigger RS-750H motor, a clutch in the transmission, bigger tires and wheels, softer suspension, a steel ladder frame, and a whole lot of attitude. The Bruiser weighed-in at over 11 pounds and featured an "on-the-move" shifting 3-speed transmission and four wheel drive.

I remember seeing the ads for the Bruiser. Back then, my piggy bank was not large enough to afford one. I used to sit in school and daydream about that truck.

Here is my Bruiser that I acquired recently. It is in ok shape for being used and almost a quarter century old IMHO. it is not anywhere near mint but it is solid. It runs, it shifts into all three gears... it just needs some TLC to make it a nice piece. I have already been gathering the parts to make it complete and I have everything but the driver's side mirror.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4017/4487907456_61e3051559_b.jpg
I did some work on it today and realized the previous owner had installed ball bearings. (I thought the drive-train was spinning pretty smooth.) That's one less upgrade for me to do. Right now... I am in cleaning mode. I have a few mods I want to do to the truck that will make it more capable when going off-road. I have already done some of them, so let's get started. :)

I did need some new parts for my truck. The bushings for the transmission mounts are blown out and the transmission plugs were missing, so I ordered some Reproduction stuff from Bruiser Builder. While I was at it, I went ahead and ordered some alloy hop-ups as well.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2791/4498806329_a16429dbb6_m.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4499441522_d3a9e959f0_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2752/4499441542_c820cc30ef_m.jpg

I ended up getting a repro replacement grommet set, a repro transmission plug set, a repro shock boot set, an aluminum lower shock mount set, an aluminum steering belcrank, and an aluminum one piece spur gear. The parts arrived on Monday and I was busy today installing them. More on that in a minute...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4494731134_ca95f3e8bf.jpg
When I received the truck, the front rims had some of the chrome flaking off and I noticed one of the original tires had a large split on the inside bead, so I started searching for replacements and I did not have to search very long. I found a mint set on ebay. I bookmarked it, waited until the last second, put in my bid... lucked out and won them. They arrived on Monday as well.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4498869183_cf67e5a9e9_o.jpg
This truck has it's share of small boo-boo's and rough spots. At some point someone took a saw to the battery tray and removed the sides for some unknown reason, so I bought a used replacement radio box. The same guy was selling the front motor mount and just for laughs I checked mine, and sure enough, It is missing the FRP spacer that goes in-between the motor and the bracket. I ended up buying that piece from him too.
So that's it for the buying stuff... let's do some wrenching on this thing.

I did a bunch of mods today. Took a few photos along the way. Lets start with the custom hats I made to flip the U-bolts. I made the hats out of 1/16 inch thick extruded aluminum.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4026/4498357887_04436cf537_b.jpg
Hats are finished. Took the rear end out of the truck and removed the spring packs, along with all the hardware. I decided to use a set of soft High-Lift leafs from RC4WD that are adjustable and will generate some lift. The front tires rub the fenders when turning at full lock, so the extra lift will stop that.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4022/4498993466_a8dcbceb4b_b.jpg
Here is a side-by-side comparison of the stock Bruiser spring pack (top) and the High-Lift (bottom).
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4498993848_12cfbb38c9_b.jpg
Here are the assembled leaf packs which are now ready to be installed.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4021/4498367159_f3fe026003_b.jpg
I also replaced the stock plastic shock mount with some alloy ones from Bruiser Builder. When I re-assembled the rear suspension, I am now able to flip the U-bolts up-side-down. No more hang-ups on the U-bolts.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4498358031_026b2fc6b5_b.jpg
U-bolt flip on the rear axle complete.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2785/4498993784_12597b58ab.jpg
I repeated the process for the front end. When you do this mod, the front skid plate cannot be re-attatched. Front and Rear end are now completed.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4031/4498367489_db0c8e70f6.jpg
Below is the finished front end. While I had the truck apart I installed a billet steering arm from Bruiser Builder to tighten up the steering and I also moved the steering drag-link above the axle to keep it from getting bent.

:agree: I was thinking the same thing. How cool would it be to build a new kit?!? This truck was already built when it arrived and building a kit from the ground-up is half the fun.
These vintage 3-speeds cost a fortune for a NIB example... and building a NIB kit seriously depreciates it's value.
I wish Tamiya would re-release these old 3-speeds. Then I could build one and not watch a thousand dollars evaporate as I cracked open the bubble packs.

Thank you, thank you. It took me a year to save-up the money and then I had to find one. I looked at several, and ended up purchasing a used runner from a collector in Amsterdam. It was not cheap, but it was the most complete for what I could afford. In the end I had to choose between a mint rolling chassis without a body or a complete runner that needed a light restoration. The mint roller was nice, but it would have cost a fortune for all the missing parts, so I went with the more complete of the two.

If you are going to buy one, do your homework and use good judgement. Resist the urge to buy on an impulse and ask a lot of questions about what you are buying.

Toyota Hilux
From Wikipedia
In North America the Hilux saw the use of four wheel drive. It had a solid front axle and leaf suspension. The body saw a redesign that included single round headlights and a less complex body. These trucks became known as first generation 4WDs.
In 1981 a vehicle development agreement was established between Toyota, Winnebago Industries and two other aftermarket customizers. This was to allow Toyota to enter the SUV market in North America. The vehicles which resulted from this collaboration were the Trekker (Winnebago), Wolverine, and the Trailblazer (Griffith). All three used the Hilux 4x4 RV cab and chassis, and an all-fiberglass rear section (the Trailblazer had a steel bed with a fiberglass top). There were at least 1,500 Trekkers, 400 Trailblazers and an unknown number of Wolverines sold in North America. Research and development work on the Trekker lead to the development of the 4Runner, which was released in 1984.

Brand new servos are installed and adjusted. Speed control is wired and working. I Also
installed a brand new receiver, crystal, receiver battery, and switch.
The radio is tested and the truck has all three gears in forward and reverse. The steering is adjusted and tight. I also replaced the battery tray (A 3), strapped in a battery, and
test drove the chassis. The mechanical speed control will take some getting used to, but everything works like it is supposed to. I also installed a new clear Antenna Mast.

No, MSCs are not very precise and yes, the first BECs came on MSCs and they would cause you to lose control when the battery dumps. Mine is set up with an alkaline receiver battery pack, so the radio is not affected by the main battery pack dumping.
The MSC leaves a lot to be desired for sure. :yikes:

The suspension is pretty soft and it allows for some good articulation, so I'm happy with the leaf spring change and U-bolt flip mod. The mechanical speed control is working, but it is very primitive, and does not offer anything close to precise control. The ESC that I plan on dropping in has arrived and hopefully, the addition of an ESC, will be an improvement in performance too. At least I will have some brakes....

Recently I saw a thread on another forum where someone had a problem with some Imex G-Hawgs.
After reading this thread I went and checked my truck just for ha ha's and what do you know, mine have the same problem. NOT COOL....
I bought two sets NIP off eBay and each package had one tire that was molded incorrectly. I contacted IMEX and after some social engineering, a few e-mails, and using this photo
as proof of the problem... I was able to get the tires replaced. I still have the other two unique tires and two normal spares. IDK why the tires were made and packaged like that.

I know. If it weren't for Thorsteenster's rant over on scale4x4 I probably wouldn't have ever noticed it. I did have someone mention it today over on RCMT but, I think they knew what they were looking for, and may have had the same problem. Anyways, I have a brand new set of 4 installed now and a request from Imex to post some pics of the correct tires but, the weather is not cooperating. Maybe there will be some sunshine tomorrow afternoon.
Oh, now I see Wyomings Jeep had the same defect. Never noticed it on his till just now. Who goes around checking the tread pattern on their tires??? I saw Wyoming selling a set on eBay and I bet those are the ones I saw. He only has one Blem though... that's weird.

Yeah , that’s a challenge to find wheels which fit the original Bruiser hubs .
Best way would be to convert over to 12 mm hex .
I did that on one of my old Hilux .
Not yet done on the rear axle , but I did the front axle , since I busted one of the locking hubs . I used parts from some of these after market axles , steering knuckles and hubs ,
Mounted to the original Hilux axle … Bruiser axles would be the same ball game .
Or adapters for 12 mm hex , or just re-machine the hex wheels ,
As long the bed is deep enough , you can cut them , since you basically just need a round hole in the back . Back in the days I did that with some plastic wheels ( just as a test )
Have you checked with rc4wd , he used to have a boat-load of different Bruiser wheels ..

Well, it's been a while, so let's dust off this thread and update a few things. Okay, tires... I now have a matching set of 4 IMEX G-Hawgs mounted on the ol' Bruiser. It was a bit of an ordeal, but they did send me a replacement set free of charge.
Now, earlier I said I was going to install a vintage Novak reversible 610-HRV ESC, but that did not happen. The ESC worked like a charm, but I ended up installing it into another one of my Tamiya vehicles. :D I have not driven the truck in a few months, but I did get the servo extension to install an ESC in the Bruiser. That brings me to today. Soooo, I received another vintage speedo in the mail yesterday afternoon...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4090/5061291705_13107f27ed_b.jpg
I just finished installing a used Tekin Titan high-power forward/reverse pro speed control in the truck. It has no motor limit on a single engine and can handle dual motors down to 12 turns. Input power is 6-10 cells. It has a 0 to 4 second adjustable reverse delay and a reverse lockout for racing applications. It also has a pretty nice motor brake. Slows the truck down in a hurry, without locking up the wheels.
Now, after installing all new connectors and bench testing it to make sure it actually worked, I made up a mount out of some scrap lexan. I stuck the ESC it in front of the battery, just above the transmission. It is a tight fit under the bench seat of the cab, but it fit in there pretty nicely IMHO. I left all the stock MSC bits and it's servo in place so it can easily be swapped back in a couple of minutes if I want to switch it back and go mudding or something. :p Let's check out my handy-work.

Thanks for taking a look.
