Hi
I've been looking on the dreaded ebay for some radio gear for my new build. There are lots of HPI RX and TX on there. I'm assuming that these are made by one of the main manufacturers for HPI.

The receivers don't appear to be labeled BEC. However, my Wrangler kit has come with a standard Tamiya ESC, which has a power wire that connects into the BEC. Does that mean that I don't need a BEC receiver?

Many thanks.

Richard

What is BEC
BEC is the abbreviation for Battery Eliminator Circuit, which is a built-in voltage regulator that supplies a constant voltage (usually 5 or 6 volts) to the receiver and servo. The receiver does not need an external battery pack, but one can be used if desired.

Most BEC circuits are inside the ESC nowadays, but evidently the cheaper Tamiya ESC's do not include an internal BEC and will require the use of a receiver that has it's own internal BEC circuitry. Once you have the correct BEC equipped receiver the JST plug that comes from the ESC simply plugs into the battery (BATT) slot on your receiver.

Thanks for the help. According to the diagram the Receiver also needs to have the correct circuitry despite the direct feed of power to the battery connection from the ESC?

I've found that HPI radios are either Futaba or Sanwa, depending on the model. The one I've seen is Futaba. I'm assuming that the receiver will be BEC despite it not being written on it!

After carefully reading and following up on your question, neither the TEU-101 BK nor the TEU-104 BK ESC's have a built in BEC. The Red JST plug merely provides The full 7.2 volts of battery current directly to the receiver.

No. You will need a receiver with it's own built in BEC to regulate and step the voltage down to 6 volts or risk damage to the receiver and servos. These will be clearly marked as such.

Futaba receivers that do have a BEC circuit....

This receiver is discontinued I do believe, but still may be available if you look around.

Receivers with a BEC will have a BATT slot that looks like this for a JST plug...

...while ones without a BEC will have a BATT slot that is the same rectangular shape as CH1 and CH 2.

Thanks for the help. It's hard to see the shape of the battery connection from the photo on ebay!

Finally got around to looking into this some more. The picture on the hpi website looks like it has BEC. Hopefully the picture works OK here.
