View Full Version : Tamiya should make scale details

I don't know about you guys but I sure spend a lot of time and sometimes money looking for or most of the time making scale details for my rigs. Tamiya is very good at making 1/35 scale accessories for their military models so I would like to suggest they offer a 1/10 off road scale accessory pack(s), things like Shovels, Ranch Jacks, axes, tool boxes, jerry cans, water coolers, rope coils, chains, Fishing poles, guns, mountain bikes, canoes, etc etc. I am sure there would be a market with the popularity of crawling and scale trucks. Just an idea that I'm sure has been proposed somewhere before but if we keep Telling Tamiya what we want it can't hurt :D

dude, you scare me sometmes. i was just going to start a thread about the same thing. tamiya has always made scale accessories for thier plastic military and racing series. why not for off road scale builders. seeing how many sites are dedicated to this kind of stuff, there has to be a growing market. this should be a "high Priority" for the folks a tamiya.

I like the idea and would love to see it happen but I have my doubts. I say that because I believe the market for such items is really small. Sure rock crawling is getting pretty big but only a small percentage of those who are into crawling build scale crawler and an even smaller number deck those trucks out with scale items like shovels, etc.
The idea of having a mold made up to produce a batch of items like this was brought up in another forum and I believe it was the owner of one of the online rock crawling stores that said something along the lines that the amount of scale accessories that they sell and profits they make from such items is so small that it really isn't worth it and that they only sell those items just to bring more buyers into the store.
If Tamiya thinks it worthwhile then great! I'd like to see a 1/10 scale winch, functional or not.

yes , that is all true. but look at the tamiya static line. what percentage of the people that buy those kits, buy the accessory kits and build dioramas and scale scenes. i would guess it is quite small, yet they still have a long line of accessories for them. besides half the items i have tried to buy scale items on those sites are usually sold out, idefinately or so it seems. try to get a scale jack, almost impossible. dont you think there were skeptics when the decided to build the mfu's, an item that listed for severl hundred dollars?? that would seem like more of a risky accessory for them to try to engineer then some small bits and pieces. yet i see alot of people have them.

Imagine, "1/10 scale truck accessory pack" they could market it for the Hilux, F350 and CR01 chassis. It would be nice, but I don't think it will happen. Like quick5pnt0 said, the market is so small. I think we will all have to continue to make our own or search around for our stuff.

Of course by offering parts as an option it makes it easy for people and that is what most people want, for example RTR although not my thing made RC grow like nothing else because it made it easy for anyone to try. Ready available details make it much easier for anyone to detail there truck that might not have bothered before so what might be a small market is only because it isn't widely known. I prefer to be optimistic the glass is always half full and sometimes you get some coco sometimes:D

like i always tell the guy at my local hobby shop when the topic of him carrying tamiya kits comes up. "if you stock them, you might not sell them, if you dont stock them, you definately wont sell them.
quick 5.0 makes a great point, the stores stock them not because of the profit margin, but because they drive in traffic. that should tell you right off there is a market if they are using it to generate more business.

Tamiya could make a lot of money selling scale accessories for the off-road vehicles! Then again maybe they want to watch people make their own scale parts...;)

Add driver figures and interior trays to that list (trays from the old mounty bruiser) and I'd be happy :help:

i really hope since this is a tamiya sponsored site, that information likes this and our ideas and suggestions makes its way up the ladder. otherwise we are all just kinda wasting our time. does anyone know how if there is a way to give ideas to tamiya japan directly?

Now that's what we really need. Driver figures and interiors.

I'm with this all the way,
Tamiya is the undisputed king of scale, seperately available detail items for 1/10 would just make sense, they would definately get a bigger portion of my leftover disposable income:D

If you think about it, there are alot of scale bits out there in the Tamiyaverse.. they just arent in one kit.. Jerry can, winch and crazed driver from the Wild Willy 2, surfboard from the hi lux, snowboard from the tundra, they still make the half figures for some of the rc stuff, I'm sure if they could just figure a way to use existing molds it could work.. then adding a few new peices or revamping old omolds they would have a very nice selection of "scale" accesories...

Did you see that Proline is comming out with a bunch of scale parts. There are some great pics at rccrawler.com. I would love to see some interior parts or some figures. Still looking for a figure for the top of my humvee and a 60 cal.
I guess that this shows someone thinks that there must be a big enough market to produce this stuff. I love tamiya stuff and hope they follow. Just my 2 cents worth.

A lot of stuff has come out since I posted this thread lol! I just got the first two Pro-line scale packs for my Tamiya Zebra Wrangler project. They are kind of shiny and need weathering and some decals etc. But I'm glad to see some scale stuff for Tamiyas even if its not made by them...I know Tamiya would make them even better.
