Once you have 15 posts or 30days you will be bumped to 2nd user level. This user level will unlock the avatar and other items.

How does a post/time limit guarantee less spam/non-serious users? Would you not say that a user trying to set up a complete profile from day one/post one is probably more serious/less of a spam bot than one that simply tries to get an account?

If inappropriate avatars is a concern, you could have them moderated (requiring your approval before they become visible).
