I have lots of other projects but I just started collecting parts for a Tamiya TLT-1 axle parts build. Stay tuned as I find more parts and get and idea of what I want to build :D

Are one of those bags a complete axle? How much were those?
Wyoming
01-16-2009, 01:17 PM
Yes each bag has a complete axle plus lots of extra stuff, heavy kits. I got them from Tower for $71.99 each but after my discount coupons and free shipping etc. they would have been like $59 each
Wyoming
01-27-2009, 01:31 PM
Assembled the axles using the kits, I know I'll be doing custom stuff to them more later but so far I used, Tamiya bearing kit, Tamiya XC/CC-01 diff lockers, Jun FAc steering links for front, RC4wd hardened steel bevel gears with longer shaft for driveshaft attachment, RC4wd rear straight axle conversion and I just ordered some upper 4 links mounts on ebay from a guy who builds them since I have no welder to make them.
I'm not sure just what sort of truck this will be, but I was digging out some parts I might use, TCS X-trail chassis plates, RC4wd transfer case and or tranny, some Scorpion drivshafts I got for $10 on ebay with the metal universal joints.
Or I might go and get a CR-01 tranny like McFig since I like it so much in my Landcruiser.
I am thinking this will be a Jeep or a Land Rover when I get further along.

Hi Wyoming, Are the TLT axles narrower than the Highlift axles. I thought they were basically the same, but in your pic they look narrower.

Hi Wyoming, Are the TLT axles narrower than the Highlift axles. I thought they were basically the same, but in your pic they look narrower.
Yes the stock TLT-1 axles are apx 1/4" narrower overall than the High_lift axles, the two TLT axles in pic are same length but camera angle makes one look longer.

Here's A few more axle pics, Most serious crawler guys on the various forums (not me) usually shave their TLT-1 axles smooth so they don't hang up, I just do it for a clean look since I'm mostly into the overall impressionistic look of a truck. I bought these cool welded steel upper link mounts from a Very nice guy named John on ebay. They will be painted in flat black along with the entire axles and later maybe a little rusty weathering. Anyway I just used my Dremel tool to clean up the housings and remove the servo mounts since I will have a frame mounted servo on my truck. A little fine polishing and ready to paint them.

Thanks, I ran out of funds this month to finish a new build with these so I decided to re-build an older Land Rover bodied X-trail chassis using the more realistic width TLT axles, I'll try to get pics up this weekend.

It'll look much better with these. I never favored the Axials. They're too wide for me.
Wyoming
01-31-2009, 02:34 PM
Ok still a lot to do but The only Non-Tamiya based vehicle in my collection is now a Tamiya based rig and much improved (IMO) over the original Scorpion ARTR this once was although only the tranny, driveshafts and modded lower links remain of the Axial, I will likely swap a CR-01 tranny into it later since this is just to slow even for me and I'm a snail driver. Anyway I had to basically take this all apart remove the Axial axles which were like Blazerbogger mentioned much to wide to look right for me, I cut down the links a little more and retapped them, Made the upper links out of carbon fiber arrow shafts fro a yard sale fitted with some misc links, I made the alloy servo bed out of a piece of broken compound bow sight, fitted some RC4wd 80mm scale shocks I had in a junk drawer awaiting a project like this, made a simple battery plate under the servo to hold the TLT-1 mini battery packs and have the weight where a real truck would have an engine. The tires are finally inside the wheel arches by using Tamiya 4mm wheel hex clamps and dremeling a bit of the inside of the Landy wheels so they don't rub. Lots more detailing is required but now I feel right about this truck since it sits like I like and looks more scale than it did with the other axles. it didn't take much but little things seem to make a big difference when you want a certain look.

No way! This rig looks freakin' amazing now! The TLT's are perfect. Looks like a nice solid truck. I wish I had the money to build a rig like this. Most of my trucks are very home built using a lot of spare parts. May have to sell one, but the first to go will be my Traxxas Slash.
Wyoming
01-31-2009, 06:41 PM
Thanks guys :D I see no reason a rig like this couldn't be built on a tight budget this one I admit wasn't cheap but didn't cost as much as it appears because i sold the unused parts on the ebay. The TCS chassis is on sale for just $24.99 right now and everything else could be made or substituted with less costly parts and it would work just as well. Example TLT shocks, Hummer wheels, Pajero tires, could be used in place of the Rc4wd stuff I used.

its kinda funny that i know your builds so well that i can see progressions. you find what works and refine it over time on different builds, like the xc rear mounts, the aluminum/velcro front mounts. they look so right you would believe that it came as part of the kit. all of it looks very clean and well executed. this chassis salad at its best:thumb:

Thanks guys, I will admit that many of things I use again and again like XC body mounts are simply the result of having had so many XCs over the years I try very hard to make use of everything I have since I don't like to waste anything. Funny how old mecano toys from a yard sale can make nice body mounts, lots of old computer chassis parts in my stuff, tape recorders, stereos etc. I find it amazing how many cool parts can be found in all the stuff we produce as a society which can be reused without much work in our models.

Of course that would apply to any personality in Hollywood or elsewhere, sure its all an act, and based on varying degrees of truth but its how and who can relate to it and enjoy it that matters, we are all are actors conveying a certain personality to other people by how we speak our mannerisms, our dress, car, or even the names we use on TC :D

Thanks guys, I haven't lit it yet but its on the list. The skies are generally bright blue most of the year and we are also sunny most of the year even on the coldest days. The elevation of 7200' keeps the temps down in summer, hottest it ever got was 94f and winters are much milder than most people would think mainly because the weather at this elevation is unpredictable and changes all the time it could be +60f or -25f on any given day in winter Its not for everyone but I really love the low population density, the mountains, the blue skies and the vast open prairies and people free wilderness :) Sort of like the Outback of America but high and colder.

I would guess they look better than they perform... not saying they won't perform well, but they may not be as good as some of the other tires that just have performance in mind. In my opinion though, the look is worth it.

Looks great. How do the Dirt Grabbers perform?
I ran them today and they work very well on the rocks and in dirt but I'm guessing they might not be ideal for mud due to the scale tread. However I absolutely love how they look when running and I expect to replace about half of all my tires with these, they just look so scale when they run and for me that is the most important thing by a wide margin :D

05-21-2009, 10:04 AM
The scale looks made my truck top heavy but they also earned me a -25 points on scoring so that helps a lot with score, its a toss up go for scale or go for performance, I prefer to go for looks. It was fun because so many guys wanted to look at and take pictures of it, I think I had the only rig where it looked like a stock unmodded truck, the wheels were inside the fender wells and I used super realistic looking tires. The only change I would have made knowing what I know now about how they set these courses up would be to use a working winch. Its all about fun and the event atmosphere is fun, the experienced people gladly helped new guys with tips and recovering stuck trucks.

I use tlt-1 axles with narrow Tamiya 4mm alloy wheel hexes, I also had to grind down the hexes on the iside of the wheels so the shallow 4mm hexes would fit, the truck is currently 8" wide and body is just over 8" so the tires are inside arches.
I'm not sure the guy is still making the links because I can't find them either.

I figured! I'm courious, will that body fit the CC-01 Chassis in the stock wheel base?
Wyoming
07-22-2009, 09:21 AM
Yes the body will fit the XC/CC-01 from what I've seen but does require a longer wheelbase than even the Touareg, My Landy has a wheelbase of 10 3/4" where as the longest stock XC/CC wheelbase setting is apx 10 1/2 - 10 5/8" so it needs about a 1/4" stretch for the wheelbase to look right.

It's not hard to extend the wheelbase using a few extension plates.
As for an XC chassis. Look at Tamiya's bodies. They're probably the only good ones that will fit.
HuskeyHilux

I was hoping the Tamiya Land cruiser 40 would fit when I pushed the wheelbase on my CC-01 Wrangler all the way out with the stock hardware. Found out real quick that wasn't gonna work.
I'm torn because I don't want to fab up a link set up for the Landy body I already have and not be able to easly switch it back to the Wrangler body. I guess I need to build a completly new leaf sprung chassis for the Landy Body! DARN!! LOL

What?! You don't need a whole new link set. All you need are some extension tabs that bolt up the the pre-existing 4-link and suspension mounts. It'd be just as easy as the stock setup to adjust the wheelbase.

07-23-2009, 12:57 PM
Sounds to me like you screw a metal plate to where the links normally mount, then you have new holes drilled however far back into those plates as you want to extend the wheelbase.
So if you want a 1.5 inch longer wheelbase, have 1.5 inches between the bolt to the stock location and the hole drilled in the place where the stock link now bolts to.
Am I on the right track?? Its basically the same principle as adapter plates for automotive seats, or transmission adapter plates.:D
Wyoming
07-23-2009, 06:42 PM
Yup pretty much you can make nearly any wheelbase you want with the. There are many ways to do it of course, the best way is to play with it and try different things using metal scraps and such.

Thanks guys, I have many thousands of nice pictures from me and moondoggie but I can never post anywhere near even a small percentage of them, and my photobucket thing is nearly full so I have been going easy with picture posting lately

Its been awhile since I've been in the mood to do much online but I have been building and driving rcs, here is a few updated pictures from last night (Dec 19)
It was a nice evening about 20f so the snow remained hard enough to drive on but not overly cool so it was still really fun to be outside.

I have been very burned out lately from spending to much time online on so many threads but I have been building stuff and I was getting a few more parts around the work area from other builds and I had these new rc4wd Tango Down Internal beadlock narrow offset wheel left over from my Zebra land Rover Gelande chassis build so I though I'd try them on this landy to see what they looked like, seem to fit really nice with it. maybe a tad big for my ride height but I'll try them out on trail before I make any judgements.
I also added a simple winch bumper using a slightly modded Axial bumper and some steel brackets from junk box to make it secure. I had to get pulled out so many times at MSD scale nats last year I thought it was about time I recover myself next time even though I'll likely have several new trucks to try this year and this guy will just go for playing around.
Anyway here is the new update pictures with bumper and wheels/tires
Tango Down Internal beadlocks (from Gelande kit) and mud Plugger narrow tires.

A few current pictures from this last weekend, I went back to the stock wheels and tires, I think I will also get rid of the winch since it broke anyway on first real use, The 3racing winches seem to fail easily but they look good.

Well if the electrics for the winch fried just take some out of a servo! If the motor for the which died, then...

Here are some long overdue updates, lots of changes since last post, mostly weathering and an RC4wd roof rack. Also gave the body a rebuild to fix various cracks from wrecks and repainted the beat up roof.

Looks great as usual.
There looks to be a little dip in the rear shock on the driver side.

Thanks,
you are right the current blue RC4wd scale shocks cannot hold the added weight of the new roof rack but I have stiffer shocks on order to fix the rear end sagging ;)

It looks like you've put some miles on since the last posts.
Your new door and fender and wear and tear make it look a daily driver.

Thanks guys, I would leave the sag as it looks cool but it drives bad with it so I ended up just adding a 3rd spring to the rear shocks.

From Malaysia, your best bet is probably eBay, Hong Kong:

Thanks for getting that one answered ;) That guy is a great place to buy the body from. He also supplies them to rc4wd etc.

I got my first body through him, very good to deal with and he'll ship anywhere. Also got several sets of plastic Wheels from him although now that RC4WD is coming out with a bead lock version... well you know, got to have it. I got my Gelande through TGN mainly because they threw in another body for free. So I can experiment on the first, maybe even try a little weathering.

good luck, it helps to layer the paints to give it that worn look. I m going to try to use rust dust from a real car to add to one of my builds to age it
