Original Body needs a fresh coat of paint. Shall it be ...

Box Art

True Flames

I agree with Arcocustom, I prefer stock paint on my bodies, I think it makes it more realistic

mmm tough call, I personally would fall in between, with just a simple paint job.

Siggy

I'm thinking plain red and put on the decals as I still got them. Anyway giving myself a couple of days, maybe a few weeks. This project never gets done quickly, anyway. Thanks guys for your comments.

Did some dust-off on the transmission. Well over 15 years, the internal gears remain clean like new and shifts quite smoothly, too.

591

Also scraped the black paint off the front/rear bumpers. Then tried-on the side mirror that arrived in the mail today.

Here's where the body is at.

606
Original color was "Egg Plant" Violet. Had some scratches on the roof, missing
headlights, front/rear signal lights and side mirrors unpainted/uinstalled

607
Chose Red Mica. Painted on Toyota Badge on Grille, yurn Signal Lights on Grille, installed side mirror.

Guys, you think it would look better if I install the original decals? Thanks.

The Mica red looks great, tough call on decals but they don't look bad on the Mountaineer, if it was the bruiser I'd say skip them but the mounty looked pretty nice in box art.

i have a mountaineer too, friend give it to me around 1999 after he striped out the 4wd gear in the tranny, i got lucking when i called tamiya and asked if they could sell me the gear, the man on phone said they dont sell pcs for tranny just the whole tranny, but he took my address, he said just in case he found the gear laying around, 5 days later i got the gear in the mail, and that made me a tamiya fan for life, i now have 5 tamiya rc, i had the truck up and runnin in no time, played with it for years, till the front diff. went bad, so i pulled the radio out of it, used it in my kids midnite pumkin, i still have it, and now i see i need to get it up and runnin again, i am hoping it is a minor problem with the front diff.

Welcome to the forum and Great to have another enthusiast for the Mountaineer. Good news is, you can get a front axle assembly or parts brand new or used to get your truck rolling. Search Ebay Item #260403302007 or #150339794429. Cheers Bro!

I am not sure if I understand your Q that well -- but looks like a partial "bind" on one of the front wheel spin. If this is the Q, then check the large ball bearing of the knuckes making sure they are free of dirt, lubricated, or undamaged.

I doubt it in this case, but sometimes "binding" is caused by mis-aligned/improper sitting of components, over-tightening of nuts and screws, or inefficiency/damage to some internal components.

Arcocustom
05-09-2009, 06:41 AM
You can remove the wheel and the hub and run it too see if it still won't spin. If it runs then the problem is with the hub. If not then remove the steering knuckle and test again. The bearing inside the knuckle is a one way unit so the truck can turn in 4WD. While apart check that one way bearing. Make sure it locks one way and freewheels the other. If it's stuck, try cleaning and re-lubing it before replacing. When the knuckle is off test run again to see if inner axle turns. If not, then you must go into the axle.:)

Siggy
05-11-2009, 09:43 PM
BTW: Regular oil is not good for one-way bearings. You need the one way bearing oil. Good cleaner are automotive brake cleaners. I've heard people soap solution or butane fluid to clean their bearing.

I painted my High Lift mica red because I always wanted a Mountaineer.http://www.tamiyacrawlers.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=82&pictureid=503 I think the stickers would be cool. It's cool either way. That Hilux is looking awesome! I'm sure the Bruiser will be mint as well. Very nice collection!:first:

Thanks. Still restoring all three and hoping to come across a Blazing Blazer one of these days. Friend had a nice once but sold it years back.

Hey A, the highlift looks really nice. Quick glance thought it was an upgraded Mountaineer less the bumpers. Cool!

Arcocustom

Yeah, mine's nice but yours is the real deal! I try. I wish the drivetrain was like yours.

Siggy
05-19-2009, 05:20 PM
Like both Highlift and Mountaineer for their attractive features. The Mountaineer for the more scale looking chassis and drivetrain, and the highlift for the more scale look body and the MFC-02.

Although quite heavy, the MFC-02 fulfills the fantasy of the Mountaineer owner to have scale functioning lights and sounds, for totally realistic driving feel.

What seems to be just missing is the look and smell of exhaust fumes. :)
Maybe one day they'll integrate those steam belching devices found on model trains, just for more added kicks.

Some updates:

Just got in the mail a set of BruiserBuilder Aluminum Wheels. They even look better in person and make the front and track width of the same length.

I did replace the pair of front hub for rear hubs giving me good 4x4 forward and reverse. Am waiting on the aluminum steering arms, as the stock plastic steering arms don't make the cut.

Have you tried powering these trucks with an FXR + 3S Lipo 30C @ 130A burst? They sure are very lively and agressive, and a lot of fun.

Hey Arco,

Thanks for the encouragement.

Here is a sneak peak on 1 of 2 Exciting Projects.

752

You are welcome.
Let's see, #1 looks like a Wreckluse tube chassis with the powdercoat stripped off and a metal quarter support and motor/trans. brackets tig welded into place, sitting on an RPP beadlock wheel. Looking good, must see more!
#2 is a little harder to see, but it looks to be in mid fab. Can see some heat was in the joints, looks welded also. Don't think it's store bought. Custom chassis? Do tell. You have my attention...

Siggy
06-04-2009, 11:28 PM
You have a good eye, brother.

#1 used to be your standard Wreckluse + pimped-out TLT axles.
754

She got lots of limelight at RCcrawler for her custom fab and fit grill, motor mount, GRU mount, under the hood, a steering servo/Winch mount under the hood. She'll be sporting an MSD winch and a 2.2 4-dyce with Bruiser tires :).

#2 is by a noted guy @ Rccrawler. He no longer makes tubers for quite some time, now.

Recognised the Wreckluse right off the bat. Never saw it in Driver though. Been a subscriber since Dec.2006, don't know how I missed it.

#2 took a little longer to form my opinion, but it appeared to be a one-off custom tuber.

Spied a "Moon Buggy" in the background of one of your posts the other day. Who makes that one?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3408/3599511510_9ce7a352d6_b_d.jpg

Oh that one, is a very good reproduction of xxx-traction by a very talented and cool chap at RCcrawler. It it is both Rock Racer and Climber.

755

His talent was recognized by RC4WD and is probably close to finishing a "moon buggy + hand-made axles". Interestingly, we were disucussion plans for a 1/5 Moon Buggy in chromoly.

Arcocustom
06-05-2009, 06:57 PM
Got it now RC Crawler not RC Driver.

1/5th scale chromemoly Moon Buggy? That sounds like a trip! What kind of powerplant's gonna move that beast? Electric golf cart?:tinfoil3:

Siggy
06-05-2009, 07:23 PM
Plan was to drop in a powerful Brushless System. Major concern was design, integrity of components, and precision in aligning the frame and fab components. Ideas like using the available 1/5 scale yota axles was a possible alternative. However, RC4WD at that time indicated that plans for a 1/5 scale transmission electric motor has yet to be drawn-up. Major gaps needed to be filled, project was shelved until we can figure out, how.

Tried mounted my Hilux Highift body on for size as that one had the headlights and parklights. Onced toyed the idea of putting an MFC=02 :) Silly idea I think --but it integrates best of the highlift/bruiser Worlds.

Hmm Maybe on the Mountaineer -- I got a NIB OG body set and transform that to shelf queen/updated version. I am still trying to get RC4WD servo mount -- but no longer available :(.

Thanks Buddy! I have a Hilux highlift that I have not put together. It sure was fun getting the Tamiya 3-speed family complete.

The Tundra, Hilux, and F350 offer you total driving realism hooked with an Tamiya MFC-02.

The stock Bruiser/Mountaineers when hooked with a high-end radio, high torque steering servos, ESC, and a 3S Lipo sure is one of the best off-road driving experience.:)

The Hilux 4x4 and Blazing Blazer, well they just bring the privileged past to the exclusive present.

what is box art
Well, if you seriously do not know, BoxArt is the scheme/look of the RC Scale Model printed in the kit's box cover.
