I like the truck you made a good choice as var as tires they look god one thing I might suggest is takeing a dremil and shaveing down the lettering it would look more like a Tamiya Bruiser then a Hilux and if you could find one of the half covers it would look awesome not that it doesnt all ready

Sharp lookin ride Arco. I can kinda see alot of goodies under that body. Im not a fan of 2.2's but those look really good on there. Ive talked myself out of those tires several times.

Thanks highlift23 for the comments and suggestions. The tires are about the only thing that hasn't been dremeled. I think with the larger wheel wells and slightly larger dimensions of the TOYOTA body, the 2.2's fit and look pretty good. Since day one I've tried to make this truck look like the older metal axle trucks, just not the Bruiser, but the Mountaineer.

I really like the G-HAWGS from IMEX and was going to use them on my Chevy too, but I already had the swamp dawgs on hand, so I went with them instead.

Did some work today on the truck today to tighten up the steering.
Here's a body off shot of the electronics.

When I swapped the steering to the front of the axle a few months ago, the throw was limited because the draglink was hitting the diff cover.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3650/3633814590_aa5bdabf50_d.jpg
So I installed 3mm cone spacers under the draglink, raising it to clear the cover.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3639/3633814612_06dd29a3b7_d.jpg
Now the draglink has clearance, but the big tires are overpowering the servo saver. So I wrapped it with a ziptie.

This keeps the plastic spring from spreading as much as before, helping turn the tires, instead of flexing the servo saver. This mod will put more strain on the servo, so a high torque metal gear servo is going in there at some point.

The front end also has custom brackets to swap the leaf spring perches to the front of the axle and I relocated the shackle to the back, using an existing hole in the frame.
The shocks are 90mm from RC4WD

Tamiya recommend not using anything other than stock silvercan, how does the 13t motor hold up to the task? Anyone else out there using hot motors on their 3 speeds?

I ran it today. Runs like a top. The trans has a slipper clutch, mines tightened up pretty good. Been running a mod motor and 2.2's since day one. The high turn, high torque motors are what blows out the drive dogs in the trans.
The 13 turn double motor doesn't have much low end grunt, but the RPM's are there, so the top speed is probably 20-25 mph wound out in third gear. Motor actually bogs down from a standing start in third gear. Must start in first and actually shift through the gears. I think Tamiya recomends the silvercan for most all their cars. That would put crawler motors off limits, but here we are on Tamiya Crawlers. The last truck Tamiya made that really had problems was the Juggernaught. Before that, the Blackfoot. If you used anything other than the silvercan with those babies, the drivetrain would grenade. The High-Lift trans is a good peice.

Thanks for the info. Hot motor here we come!
btw, forgot to mention, Hilux looks real nice. those Junfac diff covers do look sweet and the extra detail really sells it. nice trick with the cable tie / servo saver too.

Thank you sir. One more tip, watch the gearing on your motor. I gear all my trucks so the engine and speed control are the same temperature. If the motor gets hot then the pinion is too big. Bigger tires affect the gear ratio as well. After running I check how hot the motor is and check how hot the speed control FET's or heatsink is. You want them to be the same temp, that = efficency.

i had a king black foot with a 14 quad or triple motor it ran for years but it killed the diff in the end!

Thank you monstermunch. You can run a hot mod motor in the Black Foot and it will absolutely fly, but the diff will fail, mine did, so did yours. Only a matter of time. Thorp used to make a ball diff for that trans. and a dog bone axle conversion. Those parts made any motor an option and held up fine to abuse.
The housing is a Wyatt Racing designed aluminium straightaxle with an integrated truss, manufactured by RC4WD, that is made for the Tamiya High-Lift. It uses the stock ring and pinion and intenal shafts, eliminating the steering hubs, steering links, and rear lockout, making the rear cleaner, stronger, with more clearance. Bolts right in with no modifications.:)

Dusting the cobwebs of this thread here. :D Charged up my Hilux High-Lift and took it for a spin around the back yard today. Forgot how fast it was. I did manage to keep it shiny-side-up though. :rasp: Here are some pictures for ya.

Looks very nice arco, I've considered getting one of those Boyer type rear axles they look very nice. At least you could find your hilux, I think I've lost my thread lol!
Arcocustom

Thanks Wyoming. The rear axle was actually designed by Dan Wyatt I believe. I just looked and those axles are on sale for half their original price. :o I took a few pictures of the rear suspension yesterday. There are alot of modifications under there... the most obvious ones are the straight axle and the in-board mounted shocks.

I drilled new holes for the rear spring perch that moved it up and to the rear, which lowered the rear and moved the axle back slightly. I then tied the 2 perches together with a brace that I made from aluminum tube. Also installed stampede "slider" drive shafts.

The front end has even more mods...

No one has noticed, but my hilux has custom traction bars at all 4 corners to keep the leaf springs from getting waffled under hard acceleration. If you go back to the first page of this thread and look at the pictures closely you will notice some things that are not stock. ;)
At least you could find your hilux, I think I've lost my thread lol!
Yeah, I found it. Waaaaay in the back. :p Been over nine months since I tended to it.

Does anyone now if they make a housing for the front end to match the rear? By the way Arco, I love that truck!!:first: I would like to find a matching set of axles for my Yota. Great truck!!!

Thank you sir. The front axles that "match" the rear axle are sold out. There are some from other manufacturers on ebay, but they are not cheap.

These may interest you Kevin.
Junfac makes some nice aluminum adapters that eliminate the rear steering hubs and converts a stock axle to straight axle with no modifications... just bolt them in place of the stock hubs.
http://www.junfac.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=268
I recently picked up a set of the Junfac adapters and they fit pretty tight and are well made. I'm probably gonna have to shoot them with a coat of black though, to make the axle seem scale.
Thanks again for the compliments That guy. :)
