I just became the proud owner of this Clod Buster, and Ive got several idea's running around in my head. I didn't put this in the Clod forum because most likely it will have either TLT or Highlift axles or maybe even CR-01.
She's gonna need some lovin, and if I put it out here, it will force me to get going on it. I may have to have admin to move this thread once I figure out where Im headed, if thats not too much of a problem. I just wanted to show it off. :)

I was going to suggest a Suburban, but you'd need another body to do that. I can't believe you mentioned a Clod van though, I didn't think anyone else would think of that. That's a project I've had in mind for a while.

I am the guilty party that butchered that poor clod... back when I was 15 or so it gave its parts for my clodzilla and just kinda got forgotten. The windshield is cracked from meeting the tow hook of a Toyota Tercel :D Hard to tell in the pic, but the hood had been cut along the factory lines on the fender to tilt up and reveal a parma hemi engine. Ya I know its not a proper Chevy engine
I know whatever is left is gonna be nice though :thumb:
Who woulda thunk that the box of all things was the best part of this package  Glad I saved it all these years
random idea... how about a truck fronted u-haul, tow truck, or RV or something...

I think it looks really cool as it sits, it has a story to tell me. :) Things happen, :) now the fun begins, putting it back together. Its just as beautiful as the one I recieved from Arco.
Thanks again Mike..

I searched and searched but could not find a picture of what I wanted.... picture a sand dune capable tow truck.
We have those on the oregon coast, but no company seems to have their pictures google-able.
Basically its a lifted 4WD truck with nice wide tires and the boom on the back and of course the orange flag on the antenna for the dunes.
This is CLOSE, but not quite...

I've decided to use TLT axles, no matter what I build. So could I trouble you Joe, to move this to the TLT forum. :o I just wasn't sure at the time.. Please :Tamiya1:

Headlight lens set from Tamiya. Just a little over 3 bucks I believe, plus some round lens that look like Pajero lens almost. I got 3 sets, just in case I pick up more clod bodies :D

When I first saw this pic, I thought it was Clod bodied RC truck. :)
I went ahead and ordered a body and windshield from RPP, and of course Hilux mirrors, "D" parts tree. And some stuff from Tamiya America, and
RC4WD.
I really want a MSD chassis, but I kinda spent my limit this time around, so unless someone has stock CR-01 or highlift chassis frame rails they want to get rid of, I will have to wait till the end of the month.
Did a little gluing and cutting, Im just waitin for stuff to show up later this week. :D

A couple questions about TLT axles. I've never owned a pair, can someone tell me what the advantages or disadvantages of using the stock hardware for link hookups, such as this pic.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3483/3821326927_91d593b27a.jpg
compared to what Wyoming used on his TLT axles with this truss setup. I think I know, but I would like to hear from anyone or everyone else.

Also, since I'm used to Highlift axles, whats the best or simplest way to lock the diff action, and still be able to undo it if I want, with no problems. :D LOL
Also, Thank you Joe, for moving this thread :)
Blazerbogger

Either way works. I've always gone the route in the first pic though. You can use the 3rd bevel gear method to have an unlockable diff., but unlocking and locking would be an extensive job. Unlike the High Lift axles.

I was just wondering, I think I will just use the stock hardware in a different configuration. Its cheaper. And the 3rd bevel gear trick worked great. Thanks
I've progressed a little on the body. Been at it off an on all day. See what ya think. Long way to go

I know you want honest critiques... so... the front end of the rear windows (on the doors) looks like its raked too far forward. I believe it should be vertical not matching the forward lean of the rear of the front door.
But it looks good overall :D
Blazerbogger
08-15-2009, 10:29 PM
Yep, that's what I meant by straightening it out. The B pillar should be nearly vertical with just a slight tilt forwards. Yours looks just about right, but it's about 1-2mm too far forwards by the roof, so it looks just a little excessive. You got the proportions right though! Too many people, perhaps most, cut the rear cab too short. Lot's of people do half-fast jobs at these kinds of things too though, but I have yet to see a shoddy job on Tamiyacrawlers!

I really used to like you guys. But really, Thank You for the honesty, thats what I was looking for. I kinda had a feeling, I was being lazy and didn't want to straigten the window post on the front door so that throws off the rear door window.
On the back cab, I had to slice the cab on each side at the top to bring the window arch out in line with the front cab.
That should be a fairly easy job, I already have an idea. I will put this back out there when I get it straigthened out. Thanks guys. I almost didn't do it, I got that new body yesterday and didn't want to chop it up.

I worked on one pillar, on the passenger side of the truck. Does that look any better, if not I have one more idea. Let me know, and yes, be honest.
(After a close look myself, I see I need to buildup the window arch at the front of the top of the door)

Would that front end double for a toyota surf nose ?
Ive noticed on the hilux body they have round gaurds where my own car has square, much like the front of that model. the bonnet is different and might be a bit wide.. but better than too thin.
Thoughts ?
(Body im hoping to model oneday: http://newimages.fotopic.net/?iid=yp4zqi&outx=800&quality=70 I figure a 1/10 hilux shell and that nose of yours would come close.. just need something to model the back end now.)

4Runner bodies are some of the hardest to make. There's only a few in existence(other than the Kyosho ones). Every one that I've found has a modified Hilux hood, fenders, and custom grill. You really have to know how to use styrene and filler in order to successfully complete the body. I'd recommend trying your hand at styrene work before you get started on an expensive body.
Here are some examples:
http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1425/12596055/22406442/372058353.jpg
http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1425/12596055/22406442/372058352.jpg

Wow, those are some sweet lookin Toyota's, but thats a little beyond what I'm capable of at the moment. It something to shoot for, but then I see "Clampy" over on Scale4X4. Oh Well,
I've got a body and axles. I have ordered the parts to build a 3 spd semi transmission, and a CR-01 transmission, plus a T-case. I'm tore on which tranny I want to use where.
I still need a chassis. I'm thinking of ordering these blank aluminum frame rails for Tamiya semi's, it says 48",a pair at $28.00, then just do some drillin and tapping. http://www.gardentrucking.com/products/Originals/T1215.jpg
I was planning on doing links, but this truck needs leaf springs, so now I need more shacles and perches and I see on RPP they are backordered and Tower has them discontinued I believe. Sooo,,,
It looks like its going to be fairly easy to put leafs on the TLT axles
If I can get the pics up later, you can see my progress on the body, not much. :)

My thoughts also, but I need to find a real good side view picture of the cab of a 4 door before I do anymore. The one I have (pic) is a black truck, and I can't see the distintive line of door and door jamb and door, kinda like you explained. I can't even find a real 1:1 around here to look at.

I like to try to make the bodies as close to lookin real or at least something to that effect. I'm gonna take off some of the back drip guard, and leave the "B" posts just like they are mostly, I really don't like the looks of the real one, and I might be able to pull a trick on the eye.

Some of the stuff that I had ordered has finally come in, except for the T-case, I messed up when I ordered it, so I had to reorder it. Actually that works out better because I needed one of the TLT complete steering kits, and it was only $10, on sale at RC4WD
Anyway, Im using the 3 spd from one of Tamiya's big trucks, it will work perfectly for this application, but it only allows for rear wheel drive (or even front wheel frive if you wanted too...) now if I just had my transfer case.
Payday has been here and gone but I did get some tires and shocks ordered today.

Thank you for your comment. I hadn't noticed, but you are right., and they really are all the same size. Just goes to show you that you can't believe everything you see in a pic sometimes. :)
I was kinda leaning towards white, but now Im not so sure.. When I used to live in Nokomis, IL. there was a guy who took about 8 or 9 years to do a full restore on an 80's pickup, and it looked alot like this truck, only it was a regular cab, but the tires looked about the same size compared to this on. Anyway, he painted it yellow and I thought it looked really good. So.... I guess I'm still trying to figure that one out.
"QUESTION" I have forgotten the rules of painting, Is it lighter colors that hide unruley bodywork or is it dark colors ? Anybody..
Also..Should I drop the axles just a little to give me more clearance, especially in the front, because it looks like when I turn, Im gonna be rubbing. Or will that make it too high lookin ??

i believe light colors hide body work.... you can see EVERYTHING on a black car. Well this applies to full size cars so I assume it should in scale too.

Looks better black. The truck is looking very nice! Are you sure about that t-case? It seems to be hanging really low. Do the driveshafts bind if it's higher? I see you have a 3-speed tranny in there though. That will be fun. Is there a way to lay the tranny flat on the chassis? The t-case can then be mounted between the frame rails.

Thank You Erik. If I would have looked closer at first, I would have noticed that the 1:1 has a black winch bumper. I did see it had a black bowtie on the grill, maybe navy blue.
My problem is, I was trying to keep the center of gravity lower on this truck, so I've got the trannsmission sitting lower then a normal 3 spd, but then I can't run the front driveshaft under it. I had to go to the side. Nothing is permanent, yet..
I want the T-case higher without moving the tranny up, I still have about an inch to go before I hit the hood. I have one more thing I want to try before I lay it down. (Sometimes I get lazy, and say that looks just fine, even though Im not completely happy with it, but this makes me take another look at it, so Thank you)
It may not see much abuse, but I do plan on driving it. Same as my other 2 chevy's

That's how I drive. Drive it how you would a real truck. But yea, if you have another inch to go, I think that would really help. It just doesn't quite look right with the t-case hanging that low. It may just be me though. I'm into that completely stock look. I like to have some fun though, that's why I haven't converted my heavier duty Hilux.

I finally found a little time to try to raise my T-case, I wasn't happy with it, but I was going to settle for it, until several different people prodded me to challenge myself to raise it.
Everything is just kinda hanging where I want it. I am going to have to move the shift servo to the rear, but I think I can bolt it to the outside of the frame rail just like the stock steering servo on a highlift, and still line up with my shifter knob. Or something along them lines. And if I hang running boards or something, you will even see less of it.
Although, I may just keep the T case stapped down with the packing tape, it seems really secure. :D
See what ya think.

3 inches of ground clearance is great! It really cleans up the look too. Looks more like a true trail rig now. The transmission and t-case sit just right. Are the bodies two separate pieces? That's cool! It's all about scale.

Ok, when you're done laughing, let me know what you guys think. :) Just about everything is handmade except for the tranny, axles, shocks, and leaf spring and 2 perches. Im no machinest by any means.. :o I think it will do what I want it too, though.
There not the best pics, sorry. Anyway most of what you see is bolted down. The angle on the back drive shaft is steep, but its still very smooth feelin and free wheelin. I just love how easlily those TLT axles spin. They spin forever. (they have BB's)
And the piece that usually goes under a normal 3 spd, will be the table top for the electronics, after I make the top for it. I still have to figure out the shifter servo.

I carefully placed the body on the chassis and took it outside, It seems like pics are so much better outside.
The T-case ended up a little higher, the angle is really steep on the back d-shaft, but its still really smooth when you rotate everything.

I think you kinda like this truck. :) Thank you Blazer. The roc loc's are growing on me also.. You are the 2nd person that has said that about the wheels. As long as I can get the tires to stay on the rims, they will stay. I think they may be more for a beadlock, but I have yet to see any beadlocks that look like them. I would like to find some plain ole chrome reverse's, cause it looks like that is what the 1:1 has on it.
I wish I could find more pics of this truck, just different angles.. Would you believe this truck has a cummin's engine in it. A guy on another site says the last time he saw it was in 2000, over in Indiana.

I still need to do the linkage for the steering and shifting, put the shifter servo on it. After the last pics, I see a few places on the body I want to work on. I still have to hang the tailgate, mirrors, front windows, plus how Im gonna mount the body, electronics, and a place to put them. I may have missed a couple things, so I guess I m close.
I can't decide if I want to put several more coats of Tamiya's Matt White, or use the Pure White to finish it.

Also, a question for anyone, how hard is it to convert the rachet stick to spring loaded on my Futaba SkySport T4YF (surface), for the throttle.
Blazerbogger

I really like it, but the cab lights do look a little large to me. If they were half the size, they would be perfect. I know if you want functioning ones, you can buy those tiny yellow LED's from Radioshack and just drill holes and glue them in. As for the radio, open it up so that you can access the back of the sticks. I performed this conversion on a Hitec, but they should all be the same. On the throttle lever, there won't be a spring attached unlike the other levers. There was a spring mounted beside the lever ready for this conversion on my radio. If there is one, use a different lever setup as a reference to hook the throttle up. Sorry, but it's very hard to explain without showing pictures.

I've already drilled the holes and I don't feel like starting over on the body work, although I need to. Maybe someday if I rebuild it. this body is getting old. I just don't have the patience anymore.
Thats kinda what I was thinkin on the radio, Just need to open it up, I was hoping somebody had a magic wand that would take care of it. Hey, where's Moondoggie, isn't he the Magical Wizard.
since the hood opens.... whats gonna be under it??
Originally, I thought about using the Hemi, but once everything went together, there's just no room, unless I totally hollow out the engine. Besides the electic motor is in the perfect spot under the hood.
I think now I will just keep it openable so I can attach or unattach the cab of the truck. It really doesn't need to come off. The Battery is under the bed of the truck, Im gonna hinge it somehow.
Most likely wont be no pics tonite, (volleyball game to go to) but once I get pics up, I will try to show better details of everything..
This is the part that aggravates me, finishing all the little things, it seems like they take forever, but it usually does the most to change the look.

Thank you brunion. I'm working on the tailgate chains, and then I need to figure out how to easily hinge the hood. Im gonna use a 1\8 scale Iroc Z-28 model I have, as a sort of blueprint for the hood hinge. It opens up and will stay up, so it shouldn't be that hard to replicate that.

Guess I should have specified Tamiya, my fault. Let me rephrase that, I wish Tamiya would or could setup just a hardbody production line, I think they would be surprised at how they would sell, but thats just me talking out loud again.
You would think some of the auto manufacturers would or could benefit from letting Tamiya use officialy licensed brand names, heck those companies let every other plastic body(no names, but you know who, I have one body myself)company use their officially licensed products. But there again, what do I know.. :)

you must be referring to those foreign budget brands that flood local markets and hurt local industry!
Come to think of it, from where I live, its all foreign brands. :D

Thanks Blazer, I think your eyes are bad, maybe u need to see an eye doctor :D :) J\K
Its a wonder the stripe stayed on there long enough to get a pic. I didn't clean the stuff off good enough that I used to clean the adhesive off with, a good breeze would have blown it off
I'm just not sure I can ever get it nice an straight, maybe I'll wait and have you do it, (I'm serious). I wish I had the ability to paint the stipe on.

You can't see it in the pics, but I put real Shackles,(not homemade) :) on it, finally. And I think it changed where the rear axle sits just a bit, I will have to work on that.
I've also got a new radio that I hope to get setup for it. Then it will ready to be driven (BlazerB :) ) at Starved Rock ;)

That means I may as well setup my paycheck to directly deposit into an RC4WD bank acct. Because I will be replacing the wheels and tires on my other bowties to the 1.55.

My thoughts exactly, I'm gonna go broke now. Anyway, yes, 8 lugs would look great, but my hands and fingers are still sore from doing 6 per wheel now.
The 1.55 mudslingers work great in the little bit of snow we had, and with the weight of this thinrg, the flex is perfect, (Its ready to tear up Starved Rock State park. hint hint)

I guess its time to update a little.
As you all know from reading this thread, I put RC4WD 1.55 steel wheels and 1.55 mud slingers on the CrewCab awwhile back. At the time, I took it out to Salt Creek where it was still a little muddy from all the melting snow, rain, and flooding.
Well, I packed up the tires with mud and pea gravel that day
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4058/4396541546_e15f7f6790.jpg
So, I jammed it into 3rd and took off to sling the mud off the tires, instead I dropped the driveshaft, and if you look close you will see why.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/4395774403_dd5110a0c8_o.jpg
At the time I was finishing the truck, I took a couple of shortcuts, knowing I wouldn't be driving it for awhile, well those shortcuts caught up with me.
So I picked up some new steel pinions for the axles from RC4WD, they have the little hole to run the set screw through.
So then it was time to clean the tires off

Thanks Jay, Good to hear from you also :)
Yeah I shoulda took a pic, I wish I had a movie of the crash,, that passenger front wheel just dug into the concrete and the truck flipped up and on to its side at an angle, it looked terrible. (Yes, I was testing the speed and forgot how grippy these tires are ) DOH

Here is the RC4WD pinions I put in the axles, they are a little longer and have the hole in the shaft.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4433118070_26bec3d690_o.jpg
Then using the correct (don't know what they are called) set screws ????, such as these, to attach the yokes to the shafts, now the only way I will spit the drive shaft is when it breaks
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4433118012_5f29aa72f4_o.jpg
But then the holes in the shaft on the Killer T-Case were to small, so I had to redrill them a little larger to accept the larger set screws
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4433117722_87692a5763_o.jpg
I did have it all apart, but its all back together and ready to go

Thank you Damon, its good to be back. I'm in the process of moving my shop from the dungeon to the garage, a normal spring time adventure. :)
I plan on getting a set for every TLT axle that I buy from now on. I ran one battery pack through the truck yesterday with no shafts getting dropped. I think they are worth it.
I did have to change out the shifting servo, I burnt up the 1st one, but I now have the throws on the gears just right, and I can catch all 3 gears

This ole crewcab has had a busy year since the last time she was on here.
Its been to the Grand Canyon
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5066/5605844984_860bd7b338_z.jpg
The passenger front fender was cracked even then, I just kinda patched it, but it took a bad tumble out west and re cracked it. I even made a few vids of it..(I will put the latest one in the video gallery in a few minutes)
So a few weeks ago, I took it apart
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6171/6165425351_4d6fc472be_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6161/6165425437_e08d2d6122_z.jpg
But, it was kind of a, hurry up and get it back together to make a new video of it.
A couple pics of it afterwards
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6154/6183197986_704d70b0a8_b.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6166/6182677729_13a2aca84d_b.jpg
If you watch the video of it, it takes a nasty tumble, and it cracked the other side this time,,only worse
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6190/6209709226_3a6ac58e58_b.jpg
So, now its back to the drawing board, or the dunk tank
This is whats left of the paint from the cab..
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6132/6209193949_c62521a235_b.jpg
and now..

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6027/6209194163_306d10942e_z.jpg
Its going to be white again, I tried red, but I didn't like it.. I will put some pics up as I go.
