View Full Version : What Tyre for what Rock ?

Gday all.
Was hoping someone could jot down the difference in tyre grip for different rock surfaces.
Around here its alot of mossy granite, and winter.. Rocks can be very slippery if aint been in the sun for a while. And other places are limestone/beach sand.
All im asking for myself is what tyre tread off here would suit my granite terrain:

(Thanks to LosiAssociated)
I notice there are so many to choose from :)
And for others perhaps a short list of what to look for in grip patterns vs terrain would be great.
Cheers

And they are going onto them :)
I have em here in my hands, built 2 before i remembered the lead weights i had for inside them ! so in proccess of unscrewing them (Such a pain to build to! arrgghh) which is prob ably a good thing as i have a few questions.
The blue outer ring, does that go ontop of one of those black rings ? or do u just loose the black ring and replace it with the metal one ?
I fitted it without the black ring under it and am worried that the metal edge may cut into the tyre ? Have I done it wrong?
Lead weights, I have 36x 1/4oz lead tabs for the wheels. Is it best to add a little more to the front wheels ? The current Toyota wheels have 6 weights in each wheel. (QUite fun playing Mr Wheel balancer for a while!) But can you go Too far with weights ?
Certainly higher and wider than the standard tyres... Should help alot :)

Okay, delete the outer black ring, install only the blue one. No it shouldn't damage the tire.
Yes, more in the front is the hot set-up. Yes, too much anything is a bad thing. Don't go crazy. Too much weight will lead to broken drivetrain components. I run aluminium wheels and only weight the fronts. One wrap around the center of the wheel then I use fiberglass re-inforced packaging tape and tightly wrap the weights to better secure them.
Also, for crawling, memory foam inserts are standard as well as tires with a softer, high sulfur content compound that makes the tires stickier and provides more traction.

Yeah got Foam with the wheels, Didnt think to wrap a layer of tape around the inner to help keep em there, These little blocks have double sided tape on them, and i know from the first stuff up I had putting them on... That they are darn hard to remove :)

Gawd.. think the one item they would add to the package would be D2.. the 12mm hex nut that goes into the back of the rim.. Impossible to get the old ones out without ruining them.. More shopping ! 51328 x4 coming up !

Upgrades arrived today :) Put thrm on and the new wheels as seen above and i must say to anyone with a CR 01 kit... If there is only one upgrade you buy for your kit.. These tyres are all you need!
What a difference a tyre makes.. those vids of my Toyota struggling to get back up top.. will be No More :) It just crawls right over em now.
The rear tyres do clip the body shell a little bit, But nothing a stanley knife cant fix :)
Cheers for the tips

anyone got a tip for a good tyre marker ? , So i can paint the Sand Blaster on my rubber ? Just done one with Revell paint and a tiny brush and oh.... ouch.... the eye strain :) Lucky I have time waiting for a battery..
Those silver, gold etc.. and white marker pens found in most newsagents stores.. they do the trick ok ?

Yes, but I beleive they already ordered some from Tamiya USA. They look nice, but are not very good in the traction department.
