I'm thinking about doing a second truck in the near future. I have a CR-01. I'm a toyota fan and like scale so the high lift Hilux seemed like a good truck. However... I have two young sons who think monster trucks are much cooler. I'm looking at my well worn tower hobbies catalog and the TXT is almost twice as much as the Clod and yet in my opionion (admittedly and ignorant one), the clods seem a lot more popular. What's the difference between the two in terms of performance and the build? Why would you choose one over the other?

clod are MOA txt is shafty. both trucks have cult following in crawling world. both have equal amounts of after market parts available. it all depends on your cash flow.
i have owned 4 clods and driven a txt . both trucks are monsters , both run simular, more clods were produced the txt was a short run. with my kids if they wanted a monster it would be clod , but not because i have knowledge of them , price is my biggest factor. ebay and craigslist are full of clods. txt are more rare

Well, let's start here.

TXT-1

The Clod Buster has more aftermarket parts than you can shake a stick at. Here is a sample.

The TXT-1 has far fewer companies making just a handfull of aftermarket parts. Tamiya by far makes the most. New Era Models and RC4WD make a few.

The Clod Buster has identical front and rear gearboxes, with a motor on each one. Each gearbox is part of the axle. The TXT-1 has a twin engine, centrally mounted transmission, with driveshafts and straight axles like a conventional monster truck. The Clod chassis is a plastic tub with plastic 4-links. The TXT has an aluminium chassis and aluminium 4-links. The Clod has vertically mounted friction dampners. The TXT has horizontaly mounted oil dampners, actuated by cantilevers. The Clod has a styrene plastic hard body. The TXT has a pre-painted, silkscreened, polycarbonate lexan body and includes a clear un-finnished one as well.

Thanks, I see what you mean about popularity, quick ebay search turned up 4 times as many hits on clod vs. txt. I hadn't even noticed the fact that one was shaft & one on axle. I like the clod price & I like the TXT truck. As soon as I lean towards the TXT, I think for that price, I could get a high lift which is what Dad prefers. somehow, I have a feeling I'm not going to get out of this predicament cheap (or with one truck).

P.S. Never thought to check wikipedia. That was a real good explanation of the differences between the two.

You're welcome. :) Yeah, most of the Tamiya stuff is on Wikapedia.
