View Full Version : faded Orange Toyota Hilux

This is my Hilux with a single speed Rc4wd R2 tranny. The smaller R2 allowed me to gain more than an inch of ground clearance despite having lowered the axles to get more realistic gap between tire and body. I also moved the battery up to the chassis, and did lot of other little things like removing 4ws parts. The body has fender flares from rpphobby, Scollins interior kit, gun rack, rust, minor dents, and more is planned. Also the chassis is rusty and axles are made to look rusty with Tamiya weathering kits and flat clear laquer, I also laquered on some old dirt :) This truck isn't exactly soft in the spring department but it climbs really well nontheless

NICE! Somnthing about a weathered up scale rig just really does it for me. looks like an old toyota custom I remember from the eighties, if it were running around now without being updated through the years...
To soften things up you might want to try the rc4wd leafs, they work great!

Now you have amazing run times too. :)

Thanks guys, I'll have to try the Rc4wd springs. I have some of them on my new trailfinder chassis but I don't think they are the soft ones as they are also very stiff like my Hilux. Thats the look I was going for with the mods too, thanks :)

Very nice! Good detail.

Are those RC4WD landy wheels?

Awesome truck, very realistic.

They are Tamiya Hummer wheels with a quick shave of the nuts from the outer ring to look like an old steel wheel. Then you can do all sorts of things, drill holes, reglue the nuts to the inner (after shaving it) ring to make 5 lug 6 lug etc. wheels. I have a huge Hummer wheel fetish where I modify them for all sorts of things :) I have some of the Rc4wd landy wheels but the Hummer wheels are much cheaper and give the same look.

One of my favorite Hilux(s) out there! What size rc4wd shocks are you using?
90mm? Can't believe you have even more ideas for this truck!

Yes the 90mm Scale version, they are mounted to the lower axle holes and spacers under leafs have been removed to give less gap in the wheel arches for more scale look, steering bar is now below the driveshaft but hasn't given me any trouble other than getting some scrapes on it.

There are tons of Hiluxs and F-350s out there with the r2 RC4wd tranny, it has just one speed: slow but it saves a ton of room and gives a big boost in ground clearance and it is very reliable just like the 3speed (but much easier to remove when work is required) This is how I stuck it in mine, sorry my truck is very well used so pics may not be as clear as possible due to dirt and grime all over, most of it afixed with clear flat laquer

wow, a lathe motor, AND the R2 you really are slow moving with that rig. When I had mine I went to a 19 turn just to get some wheelspeed because the tranny is so low geared.

Great setup, tucked up much better than stock. :)

I don't thinks it's too slow. I am pretty sure he used a larger pinion in the R2 than what it came with. Of course it also makes for some really sweet run times.:D

Oh forgot to mention I use a TXT-1 15tooth pinion so its not as slow as it would seem, I get about 5-6mph which is plenty for me. For perspective I actually run 35t lathe motors in my touring cars because i think silver cans are too fast...I am a granny driver :)

Hmm, after looking at the pics I was wondering why you have the steering servo still in the stock place.
I really recommend replacing it next to the shift servo. The stock position really made me frustrated.

Thanks a lot :D it looks like the entries might have been on the slim side which given all the hiluxes out there means we need to get people into building more trucks and taking photos for the contests. I'll try to get some tutorials in order this winter with moondoggie for how we take nice pictures of trucks to make them look better than they are without expensive equipment and also some easy weathering tips and such.

I have been working on this Hilux ever since i got it and it keeps changing. I drive it all the time and keep making it look older through weathering. For the Tamiyausa build contest I wanted to put some more effort in since I wasn't going to have time to build a whole nother Hilux. So I got out my alcohol burner and carefully added some dents by heating the plastic and pushing it in with wooden sticks and dowels. I then added various layers of rust using some real rust, some oranges and browns, flat clear coat over everything. I used more oranges and rust colors on frame and clearcoated everything. I'm not neat about, I paint screws tranny everything looks old and rusty, I even leave it dirty before hand and clear coat dirt right onto the frame lol! Then I worked to get the bed details, some old jewelery chain painted and rusted, a toy shovel, a piece of wood to look like bed trash. Then I drove into the nearby mountains for fresh photos just for this contest. I got chased by a cranky moose and that made it even more fun :D

Anyway here are some updated pics showing the further weathering and damage.

Once I saw those tires on RC4WD, I wanted to get a set for my Hilux too! Looks like you beat me too it. They look great, but the wheel offset is too wide for me. I like the idea of rust though.

They are semi soft, harder than mud thrashers but softer than rock stompers, they grip rocks really well but mud fills the tread up quick as I expected and my truck is too slow to spin it out.

I don't know if it was fun Jesse I'm sick as a dog and coughing then it sleet/snowed so i went back to town after an hour of taking pics ;)

I went and stuck one of my extra dirt grabbers on a hummer wheel and mounted it up B and they look to be the same offset on my hilux. These might be 1mm wider but I can't tell any difference between the stance with these and the hummer wheels, it is good to note that the rc4wd wheels do not require hexes but instead have a wheel cross pin slot machined into the alloy hub portion on inside sort of like an old race buggy wheel.

thanks guys, I have heard the steel wheels don't fit all brands or types of tires perfectly without some rubber trimming but they work perfect with these tires since they were kind of made for each other.

I must not update very often, it actually took me awhile to find this thread because i forgot what I had called it lol! Anyway here is some updates of old Orange. I added smaller 80mm scale shocks and black boots from Rc4wd and moved them to top mounting hole on axle, also just starting to get some rust on those steel wheels. There is always something left to do to this truck which I why I still have it. Its been snowing more than usual this October so I'm quick to take advantage of it since for me cold weather is when I do most of my RC driving

I haven't been doing much to keep this thread active, I kind of post for awhile then build something else and neglect the thread. With this one however every few months for the last several years I do somthing to this old Hilux, its one of a very very few trucks I haven't sold since I never feel I can finish it, I always leave it needing more. So anyway these pictures are actually from a month or so ago but I forgot to post them here. I like my real and model trucks regardless of age to have old school plain steel wheels with modest sized aggressive tires. I used Rc4wd cruiser classic alloys and painted them white, they look almost perfect for the real Toyota steel wheels and I like the look much better than the spoked wheels although these won't rust which is kind of a bummer. The tires are rc4wd mud thrashers which are a bit soft but do look quite scale. also added some Rc4wd hubs to front.
