Depends on the use.... for my everyday crawlers... a pistol

Back when I had the snow plow on my XC01... a 4 channel stick was the way to go (the left stick was steering and plow up and down and right was throttle)

MUCH easier to drive a pistol 1 handed though (like when trying to climb on wet slimy rocks)

    Default hmmm

Well, I picked pistol cause most of my radio's are. BUT my hilux 3-speed does have a 2.4ghz 5 channel stick radio. But i don;t like it, and will be selling it soon. I am making due with modifying my HPI racing Savage 25 3-channel radio for my yoda. I am making a 3 stage switch for the the 3rd channel, instead of the straight on-off 3 channel option now. (so it will have 1,2,3 gearing option, not just 1,to 3 gearing) I like having no antenna, but I like my pistol grip, gives you more control. in my option.

You need both. Back in the day, there were no steering wheels, just having proportional controls was advanced technology. Sticks were the way things were done. Then Futaba came out with the Brown box and the steering wheel was the future. I had me a Brown box and then I changed over to the "pistol grip" when Futaba came out with the Magnum.

I have mostly pistol radios at least 30 of them at a quick count of my shelf currently lol! Mostly low cost reliable Futaba magnum sports and juniors and a Spektrum dx3r and a few other misc pistol radios but I prefer Stick radios given a choice and have several Futaba 4ch units and a Spektrum 5 ch along with my first radio from 1987 a Futaba Attack R that still works perfect after 23 years of use

well I guess I have to say pistole as well. But I cant see any way to stear the rear wheels with one so I guess a stick would work if you were going to have seperate rear stear.

    Oh yah & from a quick count, i have 2 older airtronics (caliber 3PS & CS2P)
    atleast 5 or 6 futoba magnum's (1 magnum sport FP-T2P, 4 magnum sport FP-T2PB , & 1 magnum JR)
also have 2 futoba stick controls (atack, & FP-T4L)
    1 traxas stock pistol radio
& probably a few others hiding somewhere.

Several of them need the battery holders battery doors & or antanas, but all work.

Dont ask me why I have so many..... Im just a pack rat & hate to throw anything away.... Just wish I had recievers to go with them all.

Well i love the pistol's but getting em with more than 2 usable channels is hard and or expensive.
I got like 4 pistols and one 6ch stick. My newest pistol is the 4 channel from RC4WD has a 3 way for the 3rd and 4th channels.
Should be a great combo with the high lifts! for 3 spd and a winch
